A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
